Department of Intensive Neurorehabilitation and Robotics
Director
Enrico Castelli
The Department of Intensive Neurorehabilitation and Robotics takes care of the rehabilitation of children and teenagers with neurological damage to the brain, the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, and/or who are affected by neuromuscular, metabolic, genetic, or malformative syndromes, leading to complex disabilities.
To be able to manage in the best possible way all the clinical variables presented by these children, teamwork is essential, based on the collaboration between different professionals: physiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neurologists, neurophysiologists, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, experts in dysphagia, psychomotor therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory rehabilitation therapists, social workers, educators, orthoptists, and orthopedic technicians. The teachers of the “School in the Hospital” also play an active role in the recovery process that begins during the hospital stay and continues when the child goes back to school.
The Department’s activity is performed in all the Hospital facilities. In Palidoro and Santa Marinella, the Department implements the robot-assisted rehabilitation, based on an innovative use of technology, in line with the fundamental principles of neuronal plasticity activation (motivation, intensity, repetition, interaction).
The Department is recognized by Lazio Region as a Reference Center for the rehabilitation of children with infantile cerebral palsy or with complex disabilities, for children and teenagers transferred from acute wards, as well as for those under mechanical ventilation, with unstable vitals, and requiring clinical and care multi-specialist skills.
