Department of Emergency, Admission and General Pediatrics
Director
Alberto Villani
The activities of the Emergency, Admission and General Pediatrics Department are divided into the Emergency Department and the management of non-specialist pediatric visits.
The second level Emergency Department of the Gianicolo headquarters and the Emergency Room in Palidoro together represent one of the main pediatric emergency centers in Italy, and provide 24-hour emergency care for all medical and surgical conditions. They also manage children and teenagers in critical condition thanks to the Short Intensive Observation (SIO) Unit and the Intensive Care Unit (Red Area).
Following the pandemic, the Department reorganized its spaces, with the creation of separate paths within the two Emergency Rooms; the first one is dedicated to the management of children and teenagers with Covid-19 infection or with suspected infection, while the second one is dedicated to patients not presenting with respiratory symptoms attributable to the new coronavirus.
Furthermore, the Department provides care to the families with a free access pediatric clinic and ensures the continuity of care also after discharge through outpatient follow-up visits and services, and with the implementation of telemedicine.
The Department is a national reference center for the training of healthcare and non-healthcare operators, for first aid (PBLS – Pediatric Basic Life Support) and for advanced rescue (PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support), thus improving the quality of care and the outcomes.
