Department of Diagnostic and Laboratory Medicine
Director
Andrea Onetti Muda
The Department of Diagnostic and Laboratory Medicine brings together the specialties of modern medicine that rely on laboratory methods. It performs the analyses that are necessary to diagnose a disease, and to identify the optimal therapeutic path for the patient.
The Department brings together different professionals, with different specializations and skills, who share the study of tissues, biological fluids, and microorganisms, from the macroscopic to the microscopic and molecular dimension.
Our main activities are:
- clinical chemistry, erythrocyte immunohematology and functional hematology investigations, as well as tests for the identification of the agents that cause infectious diseases (bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites)
- Histopathological, cytopathological, ultrastructural, cytogenetic, and molecular genetic diagnosis; biochemical, chemical, clinical, and hematological diagnosis, that are functional to the classification of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases, and of hereditary or acquired conditions
- Collection of whole blood and blood components; processing of whole blood to produce blood components; biological validation of blood components and their distribution, to meet the Hospital’s transfusion needs, and to contribute to the self-sufficiency of the region
- Procedures for therapeutic apheresis and collection of hematopoietic stem cells (in collaboration with the Department of Onco-hematology, Cell and Gene Therapies and Hematopoietic Transplantation).
All the Department’s activities are ISO 9001: 2015 certified and Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited.
