THE
CONTEXT
The slums, the shanty towns on the outskirts of Nairobi, are an unhealthy environment, where drinking water and electricity are not available. Most of the slum dwellers live below the poverty line, on the equivalent of a dollar a day. The context of the slums is characterized by a high prevalence of endemic diseases, but people have no easy access to treatments due to the conditions of absolute poverty: in Kenya almost all health facilities charge patients for the services provided, thus raising barriers to the access to healthcare that seem insurmountable at first sight.
In 2008, the organization World Friends Kenya established the Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital, with the aim of ensuring health as a right and not as a business. On average, the R.U. Neema Hospital manages 10,000 patients per month, thanks to a staff made up of 99% local personnel. The Hospital is an important reference point for the clinics located inside the slums, often lacking adequate staff and equipment, which can thus rely on a facility where even the more complex cases can be treated.
THE
CONCEPT
In line with its mission and with its distinctive principles, Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital brings its clinical and scientific skills to the world, where they are most needed, through the training of local health staffs.
The project we carry out in Kenya, at Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital, to transfer skills and knowledge in the field of pediatric radiology, will allow the health staff of the R.U. Neema Hospital to reach life-saving diagnoses.
WHAT
WE WILL DO
The project focuses on the training of the radiologists and ultrasound technicians of the Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital through remote training sessions, on-the-job training activities in Nairobi led by our Hospital’s teams, as well as medium-term residential training at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome for selected Kenyan healthcare professionals.
