Humanitarian Care
The
Context
In the framework of its solidarity initiatives, both relating to international collaboration agreements and in response to requests coming from organizations, institutions or families from all over the world, Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital provides free accommodation and humanitarian care to children without any form of coverage of medical expenses, who are not supported by humanitarian or charitable organizations.
In 2021, 40,934 days of hospitalization were granted to foreign patients. In 2022, in addition to this already complex activity, the Hospital took care of the Ukrainian patients (1,600) fleeing the war zones: since the start of the war, 4,230 days of hospitalization have been granted to Ukrainian children alone.
The
Concept
Through this project, Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital presents itself as a point of reference for the accommodation and the global care of children coming from developing countries and war zones all over the world.
In 2021, 510 foreign patients not resident in Italy, coming from 76 countries, were admitted. The Hospital’s guest houses have provided accommodation for 110 families, who often arrived during holidays and at night with dedicated flights, in collaboration with the Italian Civil Protection and with the participation of our medical and nursing staff for the entire period of the treatment. Children and their families are ensured a complete accommodation, including school and activities aimed at their integration in our country.
What
Will we do
The main goal of our project is the further development of the complex system for the care of children coming from disadvantaged or war-torn areas, which would allow us to treat conditions requiring highly qualified or complex specialist services. Furthermore, the project aims at supporting the on-site training of pediatricians and specialists, so that the treatments initially provided at our Hospital can be continued with on-site follow-up activities.
