Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, established pursuant to the M.D. of February 8, 2013 (“Criteria for the composition and operation of the ethics committees”), took office on October 23, 2013. It is an independent body, without hierarchical subordination to the Hospital or other authorities, established according to interdisciplinary criteria, and composed of experts in the field of clinic, theology, moral philosophy and bioethics, directly appointed by the Board of Directors.

The Ethics Committee, composed of doctors, philosophers, jurists, theologians, statisticians, pharmacologists, pharmacists, bioethics experts, nurses and patient representatives, performs the following functions: 

• ensure the protection of the rights, safety and well-being of all persons involved in a clinical trial, with particular attention to vulnerable subjects; to this end, it is responsible for the examination, according to good clinical practice criteria, of the scientific and ethical profiles of all the trial protocols submitted by the Hospital, or by external applicants, on which the Committee expresses a written binding and motivated opinion 
• examine, at the request of the healthcare staff, or of patients or their representatives, clinical cases or challenges related to the clinical and care activity carried out in the Hospital, and express non-binding opinions and recommendations 
• promote the drafting of documents on bioethical issues and guidelines to improve the quality of clinical practice, for the humanization of medicine, and to improve the understanding of the meaning and the practice of medicine 
• implement and promote training opportunities on the ethical aspects of biomedical practice and research, dedicated to the health professionals and the public
